The athletic training profession has moved the required degree from a bachelor’s to a master’s degree at all colleges and universities. Heidelberg University has transitioned to a Masters of Athletic Training (MAT) degree and has been approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
The Masters of Athletic Training is designed to be a two year program. See the admission pathways for the Masters of Athletic Training Program below.
Junior 3+2 year pathway
Eligible applicants must currently be enrolled at Heidelberg with successful completion of at least 101 undergraduate credit hours; the Masters of Athletic Training program prerequisite courses; admission requirements and, successful completion of course requirements with a major in Health Science or Exercise Science before being admitted to the program. Accepted 3+2 year applicants will begin the Masters of Athletic Training Program in August, prior to the semester start. A Bachelor of Science degree is intended to be awarded at the end of year one in the Masters of Athletic Training program. Students with prior college coursework are also eligible for this pathway.
Professional program pathway
Eligible applicants must complete a bachelor’s degree in any major, at any regionally accredited institution; the Master of Athletic Training program prerequisite courses; and, meet the minimum admission requirements.

ATP Related Fees
Initiating and continuing enrollment in the ATP requires the student to pay for a number of program-specific fees, appropriate clinical attire as indicated by the ATP, professional dues and memberships (seniors only), travel to and from clinical sites and off campus events associated with the ATP, and other associated expenses which typically total $500 or more over the duration of the program. Students are advised to budget accordingly.
