Technology enhances and enriches the educational experience at Heidelberg University. CNIT furnishes the university with the necessary technology infrastructure, manages many services offered over that campus infrastructure, and offers Helpdesk assistance to all students, faculty, and staff. CNIT's Helpdesk offers a wide range of IT Services to empower and support our students, faculty, and staff.
What kind of assistance do students receive at the CNIT Helpdesk?
At the Helpdesk, we provide device repair and troubleshooting services. Essentially, we will attempt to troubleshoot and resolve any issue for any device presented to us by a student, within reason. The most common issues we take care of are onboarding devices to the WiFi, replacing hard drives, installing software, and removing viruses. There is no additional charge for troubleshooting assistance.
When a replacement part is necessary for a computer’s repair, we provide the student with information about what part is required, generally via a link to the part on a respected vendor’s site. It is then the student’s responsibility to purchase this part and bring it to the Helpdesk for installation.
In the case of a student in need of a temporary laptop (i.e. for a test or personal laptop is being repaired) a laptop can be loaned out to them. Loaner Laptops are free to borrow, can be loaned out for a maximum of one semester, and require the student to fill out an agreement form.

CNIT FAQ
CNIT does not recommend specific computer brands or models. Instead, we provide tips about what to look for in a good laptop. This information can be found in our Service Desk Knowledge Base or on our computer recommendations page.
NOTICE: We do not recommend ChromeBooks. They do not work well for collegiate purposes.
While Students have access to install Microsoft Office 365, Heidelberg is mainly a Google Workspace school. In Google Workspace students have access to email, Google Drive (20 GB cloud storage), Google docs, Google sheets, and other Google products.
We encourage students to store and/or back up their work to Google Drive so their data is available to them in the event of personal laptop issues.
The University provides B/W laser printing in all computer labs, Beeghly Library and in all residence halls. Students are discouraged from bringing their own printers to campus, however, if you decide to bring one, we ask that you connect it directly to your computer using a USB cable or Bluetooth. CNIT does not support personal printer.
All residence halls offer wireless service. In addition, most, but not all, residence halls have wired Ethernet connections. If you desire to use a wired Ethernet connection, we recommend a 20-foot CAT 6 network cable. Smart TVs, smart phones, video game consoles, tablets and other devices are all welcome on our network and should “just work.” If you find that is not the case, once you arrive on campus, please contact the helpdesk for further assistance.
If you are using a gaming console, we highly recommend connecting it to the network using a wired Ethernet connection (where available).
